Penance: Moon

The sun and moon have governed human life since before we had language for either. Rational and cyclical, masculine and feminine, their significance carries across mythology, religion, and society alike. Similarly, social etiquette and obligations have always had their place.

In this diptych, both celestial bodies are given eyes, yet neither leans toward the figures below; instead, they simply observe: holding no judgment, no contempt. They simply see, the way power sees: completely, and without particular interest (beyond, maybe, a piqued curiosity) in what inferiorities they perceive.

While Penance: Sun cuts and burns, its lunar counterpart ripples and waves — wisps of blues forming a sky that moves without sharp edges to its design. The moon's gaze lies upon the figure below it, one which is drawn closer, her posture implying a pull beyond her control, her body oriented toward something she cannot dictate nor resist.

The calm gentleness: a trap, or a truth?

The moon asks for naught, and yet the figure below is contorted for her audience.

Society's subtler forces do not comfort. They compel, and she obliges: the scene is at peace.
