Mined

acrylic on canvas · 2022

40 × 50 cm

Mined: excavated; something extracted from the interior, brought to the surface at cost, and mind, the interior place being excavated in this work. Layer that onto the mark-making in Mined, which is obsessive and consistent: no negative space, no place for the eye to settle. Biological and geological, the forms refuse specificity. They are organic without being identifiable beyond the warm tones occupying the background; the only cool hue – jewel-toned, navy blue – outlining irregular shapes all throughout. The painting performs both simultaneously: it looks like what the inside of something looks like when you open it up, and it was made by the same process — the compulsive, totalizing movement of a mind working through itself. Whatever this is, the viewer is placed inside it. There is no outside position from which to view it: no background, no edge that breathes, no relief.
