Intrepid Lilies In The Beer Bottle

acrylic and oil pastel on canvas · 2025

17 × 22 cm

A North American species, these bright, captivating florals represent (to the artist) the ability to blossom and thrive in a space you may not be expected to ‘belong’. The flowers burst from the Almaza bottle against an otherwise unexciting background: a simple tabletop, a modest wooden chair. They're more alive in this context than they would ever be where they first grew. This work opens a dialogue on what happens when something displaced actually finds itself somewhere befitting. The flowers become a bright focal point for attention they may never have known in a place others may deem they ‘belong’. The bottle holds them, the green compliments them, and the petals burst forth in every direction with vigor.
