Ashes To Ashes

Made in grief in the wake of October 7, Ashes to Ashes comes as a reactionary work and outcry for the ongoing violence in Palestine and Lebanon. It is a work meant to present what such news, on repeat, does to the bodies and souls of those comprising the consumer: how atrocity, delivered image by image, press release by press release, erodes at the boundary between grief and numbness. The figure emerges from darkness; not heroically, not with resolution. It does not look up. The background moves like smoke, because smoke is what remains. Black acrylic laid over ash, mauve, and pale gold: a palette telling a story of ruin, of what was and what has been forcefully disappeared. The figure is skeletal in suggestion - the marks which form its torso read intentionally as ribs - and yet still, form holds. ashes; dust.

This work was painted as part of a now destroyed work, which also contained the painting 'As it Burns'.
